I’m Andreas Unger, a professional optics developer with over 15 years of experience.
After earning my PhD in nano optics at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, I began my career as an optics designer and later became Head of the Integrated Beam Sources Department at DILAS (now Coherent).

My journey continued at Dentsply Sirona, where I contributed to the development of intraoral 3D cameras, followed by a role at tec5 as an optics designer for their new generation of high-end process spectroscopy devices.

For more than five years now, I have been supporting clients in realizing their optical systems – as a freelance engineer and consultant.

Developing optical systems is more than just a profession for me – it’s a true passion. My curiosity doesn’t stop at the boundaries of optics. I see every device as more than the sum of its parts. That’s why I see mechanics, optics, electronics, and firmware as one integrated system – seamlessly aligned.

Every development project is unique. A prototype has different requirements than a small batch or a product destined for large-scale manufacturing. I bring experience from all stages of development – from early prototypes to small series and full-scale production. This allows me to make the right decisions tailored to your specific needs. I enjoy every stage of a project from doing initial studies, trough concept work and prototyping in the lab to developing test equipment for scaling up production. I also bring battle hardened skills to troubleshoot complex issues, if needed.
